The site
McDonald’s are proposing to develop a new restaurant and drive thru on a vacant site in a key gateway location, off Lane End in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. The site currently comprises of cleared brownfield land, having remained vacant since the closure of the engineering works on the site a number of years ago. Located on the B6020, it is a main arterial route through the town. The site is within proximity to other businesses and is located directly opposite the train station and a local supermarket.
McDonald’s proposals will regenerate this derelict site and bring it into restaurant use.
This is an ideal location for a McDonald’s restaurant and drive-thru, a key gateway location on the edge of Kirkby-in-Ashfield town centre.
If approved, McDonald’s would transform the site into an attractive and sustainable McDonald’s drive-thru restaurant. The delivery of a new restaurant would enhance local food choice, while creating over 80 new jobs. Ashfield District Council has identified the need to improve the accessibility of employment and McDonald’s is committed to bringing year-round and part time employment to Kirkby-in Ashfield.

Our proposals would see the delivery of a new drive-thru restaurant to cater for Kirkby residents in this area; saving them travelling to the McDonald’s in Sutton-in-Ashfield or South Normanton.
Our proposals include:
- A new McDonald’s drive-thru restaurant, including indoor and outdoor seating for customers.
- A multi-million-pound investment into the Kirkby area, creating jobs for local people and supporting economic growth.
- 36 on-site car parking spaces for customers, including 3 accessible spaces, 2 electric vehicle charging points and bicycle parking spaces.
- A carefully planned internal queuing system to regulate traffic within the site.
- Recycling and waste facilities across the site to encourage disposal of rubbish and reduce littering.
- Attractive landscaping and new tree planting incorporated around the site, enhancing the appearance of this derelict site.
- Supporting local community groups by investing in local charities and children’s sports programmes.
Benefits of a local McDonald’s
A new McDonald’s restaurant would deliver significant benefits in the local community, including by:
- Creating approximately 80 new jobs for local people, with excellent training available and opportunities for progression. Both full and part-time opportunities would be available.
- Regenerating a vacant brownfield site at a key gateway location, enhancing the appearance of the local area.
- Representing a significant investment into the local economy.
- Generating approximately £51,000 in business rates (per year) for Ashfield District Council. This additional money can then be used to help fund key local services.
