Our latest economic impact report shows that McDonald’s contributes around £1.04 billion a year to the West Midlands economy.

We are focussed on people and are committed to industry leading training for our employees. Our training philosophy incorporates both internal training programmes and externally recognised qualifications.

  • 80% of our packaging is recyclable and we stopped using plastic straws in 2019.
  • We have invested in wind and solar generation, which help provide green energy in our restaurants.
  • Delivery lorries are 100% powered by biodiesel and has been used for more than 10 years. 40% of the fuel is taken from cooking oil from our restaurants.
  • Littering is an offense. We are unhappy when customers choose to dispose of their litter irresponsibly. We do everything we can to encourage people to make the right choices when throwing away McDonald’s packaging.
  • We make sure bins are always outside our restaurants and work closely with local authorities and communities to tackle waste.
  • Our staff conduct 3 litter patrols a day 150-metres around our restaurants, picking up all litter, not just McDonald’s packaging. Our restaurant crews walk an estimated 3,000 miles a week completing litter patrols around our restaurants.
  • In 2019 we pledged support for the ‘Great British Spring Clean’, which saw 500,000 people across the UK cleaning up litter.
By 2030 achieve net zero emissions for all our restaurants and offices.
By 2040 achieve net zero emissions for our entire business and value chain, working with our suppliers and franchisees to have a positive impact on climate.

The Environment

At McDonald’s we want the best for our environment. To us that means constantly challenging ourselves to find ways in which we can use our scale and our people, to influence and drive change.

We are committed to tackling littering and reducing waste. We also share Walsall Council’s commitment to addressing the climate crisis which we all face.

  • As part of our Plan for Change, we have pledged to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040 across our entire UK & Ireland business.
  • We will ensure that the animal feed used by our suppliers is deforestation free by 2026.
  • We plan to source all our packaging from renewable and recyclable materials by 2025.
  • Over 80% of kitchen waste is recycled, which equates to 40% of total waste.
  • We have been a zero-landfill business since 2020.
  • All of our restaurants are powered by 100% renewable sources. Many sites supplement this with on-site solar.
  • All our new restaurants incorporate electric vehicle rapid chargers, where the supply allows.

Community

We want to be good neighbours and make a positive impact in our communities. We believe we have a responsibility to the people we serve.

Like 90% of McDonald’s restaurants, a new drive-thru in Walsall would be run by a local franchisee, who will make sure that the restaurant plays its part in actively supporting this community.

  • We source our food from over 23,000 British and Irish farmers.

  • We have added more choice in recent years:

    • Fruit bags
  • Fries can be swapped for fruit, carrot sticks or salad.
  • 72% of the Happy Meal menus are classified as not high in fat, salt or sugar according to the Government’s nutrient profile model.
  • In December 2017 we launched our new ‘Meals Under’ 400kcals and 600 kcals bundles in partnership with Public Health England’s ‘One You’ campaign.

Our food

We are passionate about our food and take care to make sure that what we serve is great quality and responsibly sourced. Our goal is to help people balance great taste, value, and offer a wide range of choices.

We recognise the importance of public health and share the collective goal of reducing childhood obesity. 54% of our menu is now classified as non-HFSS (not high in fat, salt or sugar) and 89% of our items in our core menu contain under 500 calories.
