Littering & Recyling

Littering & Recycling

Littering is an offense. We are unhappy when customers choose to dispose of their litter irresponsibly. We do everything we can to encourage people to make the right choices when throwing away McDonald’s packaging.

We make sure bins are always outside our restaurants and work closely with local authorities and communities to tackle waste.

Our staff conduct 3 litter patrols a day 150-metres around our restaurants, picking up all litter, not just McDonald’s packaging. Our restaurant crews walk an estimated 3,000 miles a week completing litter patrols around our restaurants.

Additional examples of work in this area include:

  • We have partnered with Keep Scotland Beautiful for over 15 years, driving awareness of litter issues and spending hundreds of thousands of pounds supporting anti-litter campaigns, events and innovative projects across Scotland.
  • As an example of our partnership approach, in 2021, we worked with Glasgow City Council and Keep Scotland Beautiful to fund the installation of 62 litter picking hubs across the city, providing residents and tidy groups with the tools and equipment to tackle litter.
  • In 2022, we launched our biggest ever litter campaign – ‘Keep it Clean’ – resulting in thousands of bags of litter removed from the communities in which we operate.
  • We work with LitterLotto to create bespoke anti-litter competitions in cities across the UK & Ireland, Last year, we ran a four-week competition in Dundee that saw over 28,000 pieces of litter binned.
