McDonald’s was the first restaurant chain to set science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets at a global level. Working with all franchisees, we aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to all restaurants and offices by 36% by 2030. Additionally, McDonald’s is committed to a 31% reduction in emissions intensity (per metric tonne of food and packaging) across the supply chain by 2030. To meet these targets, McDonald’s buy 100% renewable electricity and have invested in long term partnership agreements to develop the renewable energy infrastructure in the UK.

McDonald’s share some of the aspirations of South Lanarkshire Council’s recent Sustainable Development and Climate Change Strategy, a commitment to addressing the climate crisis which we all face. To achieve this, we will include the following measures to create a sustainable development:

  • We are committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040 – this Drive-Thru has been designed with this goal in mind;
  • We aim to source all our packaging from renewable and recyclable materials by 2025. 80% of kitchen waste will be recycled;
  • 100% of the power used by the Drive-Thru will be sourced from renewable sources. We will supplement this with on-site solar panels; and
  • Provision of electric vehicle charging points are also being considered to encourage greener travel.
